STCW Training With Seven Seas Prep Academy
A brief overview of course content and what I learned:
Witchcraft On a Life Raft
Have you ever seen a person flip a 20 foot wide lift raft with nothing but soggy swim trunks and a single rope? I haven’t either until I completed my STCW training. In addition to online study guides, slideshows, digital lectures and testing material, I took place in two days of in-person practical lessons at the Fairfield Regional Fire School in Connecticut.
The morning of day one consisted of pool lessons where we learned how to properly wear our safety suits, life jackets, and how to flip and enter a life raft from within the water.
Day one’s afternoon held a seminar on Elementary First Aid taught by an EMT working in the Bridgeport area. I further practiced attaching AED’s to dummies and proper form in CPR and First Aid.
WALKING INTO BURNING BUILDINGS ON PURPOSE
Also known as Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, day 2 held knowledge all about proper fire safety. We started out getting fit for masks which led into full body gear fits before learning how to work as a team, how to handle a fire hose and proper techniques when it comes to extinguishing blazes.
After I learned the techniques with my classmates, I volunteered to lead the first sweep into a smoke filled training facility to conduct a sweep to find a victim dummy. With my partner holding onto my foot, I conducted a left hand sweep, following the walls of the building, through the hallways, and around doors and rooms to eventually find the '“body”.
Vessel Safety, Personal Safety, and Social Responsibilities
The rest of the covered topics were heavily tested. During the online modules we were quizzed and couldn’t attend the practicals until we completed and passed our exams. After the exciting practicals we were tested once again with exams covering all of the topics from beginning to end.
