EASTERN EGG ROCK - St. George, Maine

MUSCONGUS BAY

I boarded the boat in St. George Maine during a deep grey overcast day in mid may. After securing a corner on the roof of a crowded top deck, we left the dock around noon and set off for the open water.

SuRROUNDING THE ISLAND

Eastern Egg Rock is the home of the worlds first restored seabird colony!

In the early 1970’s, methods were introduced here that helped Puffins and other groups of seabirds like terns recolonize the island. Gull management, the translocation of nearly 1,000 young puffins from Newfoundland, and social attraction through decoys and mirror boxes, were the primary tools for restoring puffins.

Read a more detailed description and information about the colony restoration here.

EASTERN EGG ROCK

The island is closed to public visitation during breeding season. During the months of April to August, researchers and scientists can be spotted living in small encampments working on the protection of the seabirds while they nest, mate, and take care of their young.
